polycystic kidney disease

In medicine, an inherited disease in which the kidney contains many cysts. Continuing growth of the cysts results in the destruction of normal kidney tissue and kidney failure. Dialysis or kidney transplantation are the only methods of treating polycystic kidney disease

PKD is a genetic condition, but Cojocaru experienced a spontaneous mutation that made him the first in his family to be diagnosed with the disease.
