Pacheco Areco, Jorge (1920– )

Uruguayan politician and president 1966–71. He was an authoritarian politician who governed during a particularly turbulent period in the nation's history. Against a background of economic crisis, he banned left-wing parties and sought to suppress the media. During his administration, the country entered into a dictatorship, moving the country ever closer to a military dictatorship.

Problems with insurgency arose during his administration, and the guerrilla group, the Movimento de Liberación Nacional (also known as the Tuparamos) went on the offensive. The military were called upon to oppose the activities of the guerrilla group.

Pacheco Areco was vice president to Oscar Gestido and entered presidential office after Gestido's untimely death.
