Pacific 231

Symphonic movement by Arthur Honegger. It was named after a railway engine and depicts its start and progress, not merely realistically, but, the composer claims, ‘lyrically’. It was first performed in Paris at a Koussevitsky concert, on 8 May 1924.

Here the piece is generally played much faster, the clarinettist makes abundant use of "blue notes", and in the eruptions of the orchestral passages it is clear that the piece was written in the same period as Honegger's Pacific 231.
Later in the season the orchestra will be performing Vaughan Williams's London Symphony to mark the 50th anniversary of his death, as well as Richard Strauss's Four Last Songs, Honegger's Pacific 231 and Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition.
Night Mail, and French film Pacific 231 were named as the best of the century in a special category, Cinerail d'or du siecle.
