Pacific Grove

Town in Monterey County, western-central California, USA, on the southern end of Monterey Bay, adjoining Monterey; population (1990) 16,100. A major state conference facility is situated at Asilomar State Beach to the west. From October to March, Pacific Grove is the wintering ground of monarch butterflies migrating from Canada and Alaska; a Butterfly Parade takes place in October. Other features include a state marine wildlife refuge and Point Piños Lighthouse (1855), the oldest working lighthouse on the US Pacific coast.

Pacific Grove has been a meeting centre since 1874, when it was founded by Methodists as a religious retreat. It had previously been an early Chautauqua site.
