Pacius, Fredrik

Pacius, Fredrik (1809–1891)

German-born Finnish violinist and composer. He was a violinist in the court orchestra at Stockholm 1828–34, then became a music teacher at Helsinki University. He remained in the Finnish capital, established orchestral concerts there in 1845, and became professor of music at the university in 1860.

He studied with Louis Spohr and Moritz Hauptmann at Kassel.

Works

Opera and stage

the operas Kung Karls Jakt (1852) and Loreley (1887); incidental music for Topelius's Princess of Cyprus (1860).

Other

violin concerto; cantatas; songs, including ‘Suomis Saang’ and ‘Vaart Land’, both adapted as Finnish national anthems.
