Pagenstecher, Hermann

    0.04 sec.

Pagenstecher, Hermann (1844–1932)

German ophthalmologist. At his clinic in the Taunusstrasse, Germany, he received patients from all over the world. Queen Victoria, the Empress Frederick, and many other royal persons were among his patients, but he made no distinction between the rich and the poorest patient, treating all with the same degree of skill and care. Pagenstecher wrote many essays on professional subjects, including ‘Atlas of the Pathological Anatomy of the Eye’ (1873–79). He published Lebenserinnerungen/Memories of Life (1913).

Pagenstecher was born in Langenschwalbach, Germany. He was the brother of Alexander Pagenstecher (1828–79), founder of the Wiesbaden Eye Hospital in 1857. He was educated at Wiesbaden and at the universities of Würzburg, Berlin and Prague. In 1868 he was assistant at the University Hospital of Griefswald, and in 1869 at the Wiesbaden Eye Hospital.
