Pago Pago

Capital of American Samoa on the island of Tutuila; population (1990) 4,000. Its harbour nearly bisects the island. It exports tinned tuna. Formerly a naval coaling station, it was acquired by the USA under a commercial treaty with a local king in 1872. It became the capital of American Samoa in 1899. It is one of the best harbours in the central and southern Pacific, and until 1951 was a US naval station.
