Paige, Satchel (Leroy Robert) (1906-1982)

US baseball player. As a pitcher, he established a near-legendary record, leading the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro National League to the championship 1942. In 1948, with the end of racial segregation in the major leagues, Paige joined the Cleveland Indians. He later played with the St Louis Browns 1951-53.

Born in Mobile, Alabama, USA, Paige began playing professional baseball in the Negro leagues in the 1920s.

He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame 1971.
