Paine, John Knowles

Paine, John Knowles (1839-1906)

US organist, composer, and teacher. He studied at home and at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin, gave organ recitals in Germany, and returned to the USA in 1861. He became instructor of music at Harvard University in 1862, assistant professor in 1872, and full professor in 1875. In 1890 he was awarded an honorary doctorate in music by Yale University.

Opera and stage

opera Azara (produced in Leipzig, 1901); incidental music for Sophocles' Oedipus Tyrannus and Aristophanes' Birds.

Choral and orchestral

oratorio St Peter (1872); cantatas A Song of Promise (1888), Phoebus arise (William Drummond), The Realm of Fancy (Keats, 1882), The Nativity (Milton); symphony in C minor (1875) and A major (Spring, 1880); symphonic poems An Island Fantasy and The Tempest (after Shakespeare); overture for Shakespeare's As You Like It.

Chamber

string quartet, piano trio; violin and piano sonata; instrumental pieces.

Other

Mass in D (1867).
