Painesville

Seat of Lake County, northeastern Ohio, USA, on the Grand River, 3 km/2 mi south of Lake Erie and 40 km/25 mi northeast of Cleveland; population (2000) 17,500. Founded in 1805, it is an agricultural trading centre for local fruit, dairy, and market garden produce. Horticultural nurseries have been established in the town since the 1850s. Manufactured products include chemicals, rayon, machinery, and magnesium. Painesville is the seat of Lake Erie College (1856).
