Paita

Port in northern Peru, in the department of Piura; population (2005) 69,400. Paita is located at the mouth of the Chira River, 50 km/31 mi west of the departmental capital of Piura. It is the outlet for raw materials and finished goods from Peru's main cotton- and flax-producing districts.

The old town is built mainly of wood. A new fishing port and processing complex, built with Soviet aid, was opened in 1975.
