Palar

River in southern India, rising in Karnataka state and flowing through Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu into the Bay of Bengal, south of Chennai (formerly Madras); length 370 km/230 mi. There is intermittent flow for some of its length. It is tapped for ground water, which is used for irrigation purposes and is also supplied to the Kolar goldfields. Its waters are often polluted, especially by the tanning industry. There is a dam at Arcot.

The state has benefited through significant irrigation schemes and modernisation of existing Periyar Vaigai System, Palar Basin System and Parambikulam-Aliyar System besides the minor system in Vellar, Pennayar, Araniyar Amaravathi, Chithar basins.
The effluent ended up in the River Palar which was the main source of water supply to the residents of the area.
