Palatine (town)

    0.06 sec.

Palatine

Town in Cook County, northeastern Illinois, USA, 42 km/26 mi northwest of Chicago; population (1990 est) 39,300. Mainly residential, it also produces automobile supplies, safety glass, plastic moulds, and fuses. It is the seat of William Rainey Harper College (1965).

Settled in 1833, Palatine remained a tiny agricultural market centre, even after the opening of its rail link to Chicago in 1853. Post-World War II suburbanization turned the village into a large middle-class dormitory community.
