Palekh

Village in the Ivanovo oblast (region) of the western Russian Federation, 65 km/40 mi southeast of Ivanovo; population (1990) 5,800. Palekh has long been renowned as the centre of icon painting in Russia. Miniatures are also painted on lacquered papier-mâché articles, such as boxes, cigar cases, and powder compacts.

Palekh painters were responsible for restoring the frescoes in the cathedrals of the Moscow Kremlin.
