Palester, Roman (1907–1989)

Polish composer. He studied at Lviv and under Kazimierz Sikorski in Warsaw. For some years he lived in Paris, but he later settled in Warsaw. During the 1939–45 war he was imprisoned by the Germans.

Works

Opera and ballet

the opera The Living Stones (1941); ballets Song of the Earth (1937) and The End of the World.

Orchestral

incidental and film music, five symphonies (1935–72), symphonic suite, Symphonic Music (1931), Wedding Celebration, Musique polonaise, variations (overture) and other orchestral works, Concertino for saxophone, piano concerto.

Ensemble

Divertimento for six instruments, three string quartets (1932–43), sonatinas for three clarinets and for violin and cello, sonata for two violins and piano.

Church music

Requiem (1948), Psalm for solo voices, chorus, and orchestra.
