Palestine

Seat of Anderson County, eastern Texas, USA, 151 km/94 mi southeast of Dallas; population (1990 est) 18,000. Settled in 1846, it is situated on a rail and interstate highway junction. The surrounding area is wooded, and contains lignite, clay, natural gas, and oil deposits. Industries are diverse, and include railway repair shops. A NASA scientific balloon base is located in the town. Lake Palestine, a 10,350-ha/25,600-ac reservoir on the Neches River, lies 37 km/23 mi to the northeast.
