Palm Beach

Luxurious winter resort in southeast Florida, USA, on an island between Lake Worth and the Atlantic; population (1996 est) 9,700. Bridges link the island beaches with West Palm Beach on the mainland, a larger neighbour with a deep-water harbour and international airport. Palm Beach was settled in the 1870s.

Henry Flagler first developed the community as a resort in the 1890s, when he built the Royal Poinciana Hotel. It now has mansions, clubs, and large estates as well as resort hotels.

The island is a section of the sandbars lining the east coast of Florida. Resort development has occurred almost continuously along the shore from Palm Beach to Miami, 100 km/63 mi to the south.
