Palma Giovane, Jacopo Palma

    0.01 sec.

Palma Giovane, Jacopo Palma (1544-1628)

Italian painter. Active mostly in Venice, he blended elements of mid-16th-century Roman and Venetian styles. He painted mainly religious and historical subjects.

He studied in Rome (1567-75), but was also strongly influenced by three of the major figures of Venetian art: Titian, Tintoretto, and Paolo Veronese. Many of his commissions were executed for Venice, such as his frescoes for the Doge's Palace, but a number of his works were ordered from other Italian cities. When Tintoretto died in 1594, Palma Giovane became the leading artist in Venice.

He was the grand-nephew of Palma Vecchio.
