Palmdale

City in Los Angeles County, southwestern California, USA, 56 km/35 mi northeast of Los Angeles; population (1990) 68,900. It is situated in the Antelope Valley, just north of the San Andreas fault and the San Gabriel Mountains. Since the 1950s the region has been a centre for aircraft testing and assembly; Edwards Air Force Base lies 21 km/13 mi to the north. Palmdale is an expanding residential suburb; its population increased fivefold in the 1980s.
