Palmer

Town in Matanuska-Susitna Borough, southern-central Alaska, USA, on the Matanuska River, 55 km/34 mi northeast of Anchorage; population (1990) 2,900. Situated in the middle of the Matanuska Valley, it is a market and service centre for the region's vegetable, grain, and dairy farms. An agricultural research centre and extension service of the University of Alaska are located here, and it is also the site of the Alaska State Fair.
