Palmer, Arnold Daniel (1929- )

US golfer who helped to popularize the professional sport in the USA in the 1950s and 1960s. He won the Masters in 1958, 1960, 1962, and 1964, the US Open in 1960, and the British Open in 1961 and 1962. He won the Ryder Cup seven times, including once as playing captain and once as non-playing captain.

Born in Pennsylvania, he won the US amateur title in 1954, and went on to win all the world major professional trophies except the US PGA Championship. In the 1980s he enjoyed a successful career on the US Seniors Tour, winning ten titles.
