Palmer, John McAuley

Palmer, John McAuley (1817-1900)

US soldier and senator. A lawyer who helped form the Republican Party in Illinois, he commanded a Union division at Stones River (Murfreesboro) (1862) and Chickamauga (1863). In a long post-war career, he served as Republican governor of Illinois (1868-72) and later, as a Democrat, in the US Senate (1891-97). He ran for president as a minor party candidate in 1896. He was born in Scott County, Kentucky.
