Palmerston North

Town on the Manawatu River, southwest North Island, New Zealand, 140 km/87 mi north of Wellington; population (2001 est) 72,000. It is the commercial centre for the extensive dairy and mixed farming area of the Manawatu Plain. Industries also include printing, brewing, the manufacture of clothing, fertilizers and pharmaceuticals, and automobile and tractor assembly.

Palmerston North was founded in 1866 and populated mainly by settlers of Scandinavian descent. It became a city in 1930. Massey University (1963), originally an agricultural college, has become a comprehensive tertiary educational institution.
