Palmira

Town in Colombia, in the department of Valle del Cauca; population (2005) 223,000. Palmira lies 45 km/28 mi east of the departmental capital, Calí. The surrounding region grows tobacco, coffee, grain, sugar cane, and rice, and has an experimental agricultural station. The town is situated on the railway line that climbs up the Cordillera Occidental from the port of Buenaventura, passes through Calí, and proceeds along the Andean spine to Medellín and beyond.
