Palmyra Island

Coral atoll 1,600 km/1,000 mi southwest of Hawaii, in the Line Islands, South Pacific. It was part of Hawaii from 1862, but was excluded when Hawaii became a state in 1959. It was purchased by the USA from a Hawaiian family in 1979 and was used for the storage of highly radioactive nuclear waste from 1986. Palmyra is now a yacht stopover and a tourist destination.
