Palo Alto

City in central California, USA, on the west shore of San Francisco Bay, near the base of the San Francisco peninsula; 70 km/44 mi southeast of San Francisco; population (1996 est) 58,300. Situated at one end of the high-tech region known as Silicon Valley, it is a centre for the electronics and computer industries. It is also the seat of Stanford University, and numerous related research institutions. Palo Alto was founded 1891.

Rapid suburban growth has been achieved by reclamation of the low-lying bay shore to the east, and extensive encroachment on the fruit orchards which formerly surrounded the city.
