pampas grass

Tall fronds of pampas grass growing in Japan. There are 20 different species of this plant, and it has flowers that may grow to a height of nearly 0.9m/3ft. In more recent times it has been cultivated as an ornamental garden plant in the warmer areas of the world.

Any of a group of large grasses native to South America, especially C. argentea, which is grown in gardens and has tall leaves and large clusters of feathery white flowers growing around the tips of the flower-bearing stems. (Genus Cortaderia.)
