Panama City

Deepwater port and seat of Bay County, northwestern Florida, USA, on St Andrew Bay off the Gulf of Mexico, 140 km/90 mi southeast of Pensacola; population (2000) 36,400. It is a busy port and resort centre, with commercial and sport fishing. Other industries include papermaking, and the manufacture of clothing, plastics, and chemicals. Educational facilities include the Naval Coastal Systems Centre diving school and Gulf Coast Community College (1957).

Settled by the English in 1765, Panama City initially developed as a fishing village. The bayfront resort of Panama City Beach and the US Mine Defense Laboratory lie nearby, and the air tactical school at Tyndall Air Force Base is situated to the southeast.
