Panay

One of the Philippine islands, lying between Mindoro and Negros; area 11,515 sq km/4,446 sq mi. The capital is Iloilo. Industries include rice, sugar, pineapples, bananas, copra, and copper. The island is mountainous, reaching 2,215 m/7,265 ft in Madiaás. It was seized by Spain in 1569, and occupied by Japan 1942–45.
