Pando

Department in northwest Bolivia, adjoining Brazil and Peru; area 62,078 sq km/23,968 sq mi; population (2000 est) 57,300. The capital is Cobija. Pando is situated in the Oriente, a lowland east of the Andes, and covers a low-lying, heavily forested area between the Abuná and Acre rivers to the north. It is bounded by the Madeira River to the east along the Brazilian frontier, by the Madre de Dios River to the southwest, and by the Beni River to the east. Its economy is small-scale and dependent on forest products, including rubber, Brazil nuts and mahogany.
