Pangnirtung

Village on the southeast coast of Baffin Island, situated in the Canadian territory of Nunavut, in a fjord on the northern side of Cumberland Sound, 290 km/180 mi northeast of Iqaluit; population (2006) 1,300. Traditional industries include fishing, sealing, whaling, and the production of fur and Inuit arts; a crafts cooperative and various government stations have been established here. As a tourist centre, it is the gateway to Auyuittuq National Park.

Kekerten Island Historic Park, situated in the sound 50 km/30 mi to the southeast, contains an 1850s–1920s whaling station. Other features include an arts and craft centre. The village also contains an airport and part of Nunavut Arctic College (1984).
