Panini, Giovanni Paolo

Panini (or Pannini), Giovanni Paolo (1691/2–1765)

Italian painter. He specialized in architectural subjects and views of Rome, his work comprising ‘caprices’ – imaginative combinations of ruins – and views of actual places, such as his versions of the interior of St Peter's basilica.

The record of the city's aspect left by him and his contemporary Giambattista Piranesi is comparable with that of Venice made by Canaletto and Francesco Guardi, and it seems likely that the example of Panini helped to direct Canaletto (after an early visit to Rome) to a similar specialization.

Panini was a member of both the Academy of St Luke (president 1754–55) and the French Academy in Rome.
