Pantelleria Island

Volcanic island in the Mediterranean, 100 km/62 mi southwest of Sicily and part of that region of Italy; area 115 sq km/45 sq mi. The majority of the population live in the island's capital Pantelleria, on the northwest coast; population (1990) 7,700. Sheep are raised, and fruit, olives, and capers produced.

History

Pantelleria has drystone dwellings dating from prehistoric times. The Romans sent people into exile there. Strategically placed, the island has been the site of many battles. It was strongly fortified by Mussolini in World War II but surrendered to the Allies on 11 June 1943.
