mandrill

Large West African forest-living baboon, active mainly on the ground. It has large canine teeth like the drill (M. leucophaeus), to which it is closely related. The nose is bright red and the cheeks are striped with blue; the thick skin of the buttocks is also red, and the fur is brown, apart from a yellow beard. (Species Mandrillus sphinx.)

Males are much larger than females, showing greater sexual dimorphism than any other primate. Males weigh up to 35 kg/77 lb and females usually less than 12 kg/26 lb. Females exhibit none of the bright coloration of the male. A single infant is born after 5 months' gestation; it is weaned at 6 months. Females reach sexual maturity at about three years; males at around ten years.
