Pappano, Antonio (1959– )

British conductor and pianist. Known for his spirit and passion, he was music director of the Théâtre Royal de La Monnaie, Brussels, Belgium, 1992–2002 and the Royal Opera House, London, England, from 2002.

He has conducted at opera houses all over Europe and the USA. He is also principal guest conductor of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.

He was born in London to Italian immigrant parents. The family moved to Bridgeport, Connecticut, when he was 13, and he studied piano, composition, and conducting in the USA before returning to Europe to pursue his musical career.
