Paradis, Maria Theresia von (1759–1824)

Austrian pianist, organist, singer, and composer. She was blind from childhood, but was a successful musician, extending her reputation to Paris and London. Mozart wrote the piano concerto in B flat major (K456) for her.

She studied with Antonio Salieri and Leopold Kozeluch in Vienna.

Opera and stage

operas Der Schulcandidat (1792), Rinaldo und Alcina (1797); melodrama Ariadne und Bacchus (1791).

Choral

cantata Deutsches Monument (on the death of Louis XVI).

Chamber and other

piano trios; sonatas and variations for piano; songs, including a setting of Burger's ‘Lenore’.
