Paradise and the Peri

A setting for solo voices, chorus, and orchestra of one of the poems in Thomas Moore's Lalla Rookh, translated into German with alterations, by Robert Schumann, Op. 50. The composition was first contemplated in 1841, begun in February 1843, and first performed in Leipzig, on 4 December 1843.

AS THE Liverpool Phil's Robert Schumann Festival ended last Saturday with Paradise and the Peri, I received a CD collection of his songs sung by a group of singers led by soprano Geraldine McGreevy.
The efforts of the Rodewald Concerts Society to explore chamber and vocal works of Schumann led up to the powerful, magnificent oratorio Das Paradies und die Peri - Paradise and the Peri.
These include chamber works and the quite wonderful Paradise and the Peri early on in March.
