Paraguarí

Town in southern Paraguay, 65 km/40 mi southeast of the capital Asunción; population (1992) 7,300. It is the capital of the department of Paraguarí, and a commercial centre for the surrounding fertile agricultural district. The main products traded here are cotton, tobacco, sugar, maize, and hides. There are also potteries, tanneries, and distilleries.

The town dates from 1775 and originated as a Jesuit mission. A battle here in 1811 established the independence of Paraguay from Argentina and the town is now the home of the country's regiment and school of artillery.

Paraguarí is on the central Paraguayan railway connecting Asunción and Encarnación.
