Paramount Studios

US film production and distribution company. A major studio from the silent days of cinema, Paramount was adept at discovering new talent, and Cecil B De Mille made many of his films for the studio. In 1966 the company was taken over by Gulf and Western Industries. Viacom bought Paramount in 1994.

The company was founded in 1912 as the Famous Players Film Company by Adolph Zukor (1873–1976). In 1914 it merged with the distribution company Paramount Pictures. In recent decades it has produced such successful films as The Godfather (1972), Grease (1978), and Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), as well as popular television series.
