Paranaguá

Chief port of the state of Paraná, southern Brazil, 88 km/55 mi east of the state capital Curitiba; population (1996) 124,920. Paranaguá is situated on a lagoon-like bay some 30 km/19 mi from the open sea, and many shipping lines use it as a port of call. The main exports are coffee (it is the second most important coffee-exporting port in Brazil), yerba maté, timber (particularly Paraná pine), paper, hides, and other agricultural products.

There is a new museum of archaeology and ethnology, and a growing tourist industry.
