A winter view of Llyn Ogwen, North Wales. The lake is in the upper section of the Nant Ffrancon valley, in the Snowdonia national park. To the north lie the Carneddau, rounded mountains around 1,051 m/3,450 ft high; to the south is the much more rugged Glyder range (997 m/3,270 ft) and Tryfan (917 m/3,008 ft).

Dolbadarn castle in Snowdonia, Wales, dates from the early 13th century and was probably built by Llewelyn I, Prince of Wales. Later in the century, Owain Goch was kept prisoner in the castle for 20 years, following his unsuccessful attempt to overturn his brother Llewelyn II. Set strategically on a knoll commanding the entrance to Llanberis Pass, the remains of the castle's main circular tower are almost 15 m/50 ft high.

The Snowdon range in winter, viewed from the slopes of Glyder Fawr and across the Llanberis Pass. Exposed to high winds and cold temperatures, these Welsh mountains support little vegetation but are used extensively by climbers and walkers.

Looking north along the banks of the river Glaslyn to the foothills of Snowdon. The white houses mark the village of Beddgelert, in the county of Gwynedd. Between the river and the village lies the grave of Gelert, a gallant dog that, according to legend, saved the baby son of Prince Llewelyn I from a wolf.

Mountainous region of north Wales, comprising three massifs above 1,000 m/3,280 ft divided by the passes of Llanberis and Nant Ffrancon: Snowdon (Welsh Yr Wddfa), the Glyders, and the Carnedds (including Carnedd Dafydd and Carnedd Llewelyn). Snowdonia was designated a National Park in 1951. The park area of 2,188 sq km/845 sq mi dominates Gwynedd and extends eastwards into Conwy county borough.
