Parsifal

In Germanic mythology, one of the knights who sought the Holy Grail; the father of Lohengrin.

Parsifal

Music drama, or Bühnenweihfestspiel (‘sacred festival drama’), by Richard Wagner (libretto by composer), produced in Bayreuth at the Wagner Festival Theatre, on 26 July 1882. In the story, Parsifal recovers the sacred spear from the evil magician Klingsor and returns to the Kingdom of the Grail to heal the wounded Amfortas. The ‘wild woman’ Kundry, whom Parsifal had met earlier, is also redeemed but then dies.

Olsen places Parcifal, in particular within the context of the director's time and mind, and introduces readers to Syberberg's understanding of Freud, Jung, alchemy, his aesthetic and philosophical views, and his intentions in exposing Wagner's treatment of a seeker of the Grail.
