Parisina

Opera by Gaetano Donizetti (libretto by Felice Romani, based on Byron's poem) produced in Florence, at the Teatro della Pergola, on 17 March 1833. The story concerns Parisina, wife of Duke Azzo, who falls in love with Ugo. Azzo forces her confession when she murmurs Ugo's name in her sleep, then executes Ugo, despite the revelation that Ugo is his long-lost son.

Opera by Pietro Mascagni (libretto by Gabriel d'Annunzio), produced in Milan, at La Scala, on 15 December 1913.

Most of my readers are aware that the second act of "Parisina" opens with the celebrated and effective duet in which Parisina, while sleeping, betrays to Azzo the secret of her love for Ugo.
