park and ride

Town-planning scheme in which parking space is provided (often free) some distance away from the central business district. Shoppers are taken by bus to the central area, which may be traffic-free (pedestrianization). Park and ride is one of the planning strategies that can be used to combat congestion. Park and ride became widespread in the 1980s.
