Parker

Seat of La Paz County and headquarters of the Colorado River Indian Reservation, western-central Arizona, on the Colorado River and Californian border, 210 km/130 mi northwest of Phoenix; population (1990) 2,900. The town is a tourist base for a popular riverside recreational area extending to the Parker Dam and Lake Havasu, 24 km/15 mi to the northeast. The reservation extends over 108,930 ha/269,000 ac; population (1990) 7,900. Established in 1865, it is inhabited by Mojave, Chemehuevi, and other American Indian peoples from Arizona and California.

During World War II Poston, situated 19 km/12 mi to the southwest, was the site of the largest single internment camp for Americans of Japanese ancestry; it held up to 18,000 people at a time.
