Parker, Horatio

Parker, Horatio (William) (1863–1919)

US organist and composer. He held several church organist's posts in Boston and New York, and wrote choral music.

He studied at Boston and Munich, where he was a pupil of Joseph Rheinberger. In 1884 he returned to New York and became an organist and choirmaster. He also taught at the National Conservatory, directed by Dvořák. Later he became organist at Trinity Church, Boston, and, in 1894, professor of music at Yale University. He visited England several times for performances of his works at music festivals and to receive an honorary doctorate from Cambridge University in 1902.

oratorios Hora novissima (1893), The Legend of St Christopher (1897), Morven and the Grail (1915); cantatas, including The Holy Child (1893), The Dream of Mary (1918); choral ballads.

Other

church services; symphony in C major (1885), overtures, and other orchestral works; organ concerto; string quartet in F major (1885); organ sonata; piano pieces; songs.
