Parkersburg

City, river port, and administrative headquarters of Wood County, northwest West Virginia, USA, at the mouth of the Little Kanawha River on the Ohio River, 28 mi/45 km southwest of Wheeling and 70 mi/112 km north of Charleston; population (2000) 33,100. It is a processing and distribution center for the oil, natural gas, coal, and clay found in the surrounding region. Industries include the manufacture of chemicals, plastics, synthetic materials, glassware, porcelain, and paper. A West Virginia University campus (1971) and Ohio Valley College (1960) are in the city.

Parkersburg was settled in 1785.

Ed Thomas, the head football coach at Aplington-Parkersburg High School in Parkersburg, Iowa, was shot and killed by a former student in the school's weight room.
The other two schools, Marshall CTC in Huntington and West Virginia University at Parkersburg, have until July 1 to change their names or strike an agreement with the larger schools on trademark use.
