Lot

In the Old Testament, Abraham's nephew, who escaped the destruction of Sodom. Lot's wife disobeyed the condition of not looking back at Sodom and was punished by being turned into a pillar of salt.

Lot

Département in the Midi-Pyrénées region of France; area 5,228 sq km/2,019 sq mi; population (1999 est) 160,200. The land is crossed from east to west by the River Lot and is highest in the northeast. Wheat is the chief cereal, but maize, oats, and barley are also cultivated. Wine is the principal product, the most valued being that of the administrative centre Cahors, grown in the Lot valley. The département produces potatoes and tobacco, and chestnuts in the northeast. Cloth-making, tanning, brewing, tourism, and the making of agricultural implements are among its other industries. Other towns include Figeac and Gourdon.

Lot was formed from the former district of Quercy.
