member of Parliament

Representative of a section of the UK population who attends the British parliament. An MP is elected to represent the people who live in a geographical area called a constituency, and then attends the House of Commons, where the activities of the government are considered by the members and legislation is passed. MPs divide their time between their constituencies and the houses of Parliament in London. An MP can ask questions of government ministers, join committees, speak in the House of Commons, and consider and propose new laws.
