Parnaíba

River in northeast Brazil; length 1,440 km/895 mi. The Parnaíba rises in the southwest of the state of Piauí around Serra da Tabatinga. Following a southwest–northeast course, along which it forms the boundary between Piauí and Maranhão, it enters the Atlantic Ocean at the port of Parnaíba.

The river represents an important transport link for the state of Piauí, connecting its capital Teresina, 320 km/199 mi inland, with the sea. The Parnaíba drainage basin is the largest between that of the Amazon to the northwest and the São Francisco to the southeast. Southwest of Teresina, the river is dammed to form the Boa Esperança reservoir.

Parnaíba

Seaport of Piauí state, in northeast Brazil, 280 km/174 mi east of São Luis; population (2000) 125,000. The centre of a rich agricultural district, it is the distribution centre and export outlet for the state. Main exports are cattle and tropical products. It is a port of call for Atlantic shipping.
